South Carolina got positive news on Wednesday in that transfer WR Jalen Brooks was cleared to play by the NCAA. Brooks transferred from Wingate via Tarleton State in the offseason, and was initially denied eligibility to play this season until his appeal was approved.
Coach Will Muschamp said that Brooks has been with the offense and is very bright, but unsure if he would start at LSU this week. Brooks was one of the brightest stories in the preseason for the Gamecocks as all indications from teammates and coaches were that he held his own and then some.
“He can stretch the field, he was one of the fastest guys on the team, he’s can play inside and outside,” Muschamp said. “He brings a lot of variety. My advice for any young man coming in is to be humble and earn it … and that’s what Jalen has done.”
In other news, Muschamp said DB Cam Smith is doubtful for the LSU game.
However, the star of the secondary last week in the win over Auburn was Jaycee Horn.
“He’s very very competitive,” Muschamp said. “He likes to compete at the highest level, he wants the best guy each week… long speed to finish, he has great ball skills, ball skills to finish. He has good instincts… I think he’s an elite corner, no doubt about that. He’s as good as I’ve been around.”
