South Carolina may not end up playing for a national title this season, but there’s a championship at stake each week for the Gamecocks.

South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference that the belt is awarded to the defensive player with the most production each week. The championship belt remains with that player until someone else takes it from them, Muschamp said.

The prize currently belongs to junior defensive back Chris Lammons, but his teammate will be vying for it when the Gamecocks travel to Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday.
