Spurs Up! It’s a signal all South Carolina fans love to see on social media from Will Muschamp.

While NCAA coaches are not permitted to publicly discuss or name prospects they are recruiting — at least until those prospects sign scholarship papers — programs across the nation get around the rule by using specific code words to indicate to the fan base that a commitment is about to become public.

South Carolina is no different and that’s where “Spurs Up!” comes in. Every Gamecock fan knows the code word means the program has landed a commitment but do you know where the slogan came from? During his media availability on Thursday, Muschamp revealed it was his wife’s idea.

“My wife came up with Spurs Up,” Muschamp said. “We were in the Big 12 and everybody has got a hand signal and got a saying, you know? And she said, ‘We need one here.’ So I says, ‘What do you want?’ She said, ‘Spurs Up sounds good to me.’ I said, ‘That sounds great to me!’

The Gamecock coach went on to express how much the energy and passion that Spurs Up evokes from the South Carolina fan base is important to the program.

“We wanted to have a way to let our fan base know a young man wanted to be at South Carolina and so we kinda came up with that, it was her idea and we’ve kinda run with it,” he continued. “I think people, obviously, especially Gamecock fans, are excited whenever they see that. Excited about an addition to our family.”
