Northwestern and Penn State were locked in an offensive struggle on Saturday.
At one point, teams combined to have this sequence: Fumble, 5-yard run, no gain, incomplete, punt, 3-yard run, 8-yard pass, interception, no gain, loss of 1, interception.
During a penalty announcement by the referee, one frustrated fan hurled this not-safe-for-work comment: “F— you ref!”
There was plenty to be frustrated with for a fan of either team.

As Penn State led 7-0 early in the second quarter, the possessions for both teams ended like this: Punt, touchdown, interception, interception, punt, fumble, punt, punt and punt.
Both teams had reason to work toward a bounce-back game this week.
The Nittany Lions struggled in a lackluster win against Central Michigan last week. They want to polish their play ahead of open date and visit to No. 4 Michigan on Oct. 15. The Wildcats, meanwhile, have lost 3 in a row, and are looking to avoid their first 1-4 start since 2019.
