Matt Campbell reportedly turned down NFL job, $68.5 million contract to stay at Iowa State
Matt Campbell must really love coaching for Iowa State.
While all coaches publicly express their commitment to their current school, we all know most coaches follow the money but apparently, Campbell is cut from a different cloth.
According to Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, the Iowa State coach turned down an offer from the Detroit Lions worth nearly $70 million this offseason.
The way Dodd tells it, Campbell believes his prospects are brighter at Iowa State than landing at one of the NFL’s historically poor franchises.
“Interesting note for Matt Campbell. In the offseason, he turned down an eight-year, 68 and a half million dollar offer from the Lions, apparently with full control — I haven’t confirmed that — to stay at Iowa State,” Dodd says in the clip below.
“Now, if I’m Matt Campbell’s wife, I’m having some questions, but he sees his upward arc better at Iowa State than, look, the Lions that are annually in disarray. But look, I would take that money and take my chances of disarray for over the next eight years than Iowa State, but if you want to talk about loyalty, he is the ultimate loyal guy.”
