Texas Tech’s coaching search may be coming to an end very soon.

According to Don Williams and Carlos Silva, Jr. of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech will name Baylor assistant coach Joey McGuire its next head coach.

McGuire has coached at Baylor for the last 5 seasons. He serves as Baylor’s associate head coach and outside linebackers coach.

Prior to his stop at Baylor, McGuire was a legendary Texas high school head coach at Cedar Hill (Texas) High School where he won 3 state championships in 14 seasons. In 2020, he was elected to the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

McGuire recorded an overall record of 141-42 at Cedar Hill and won state championships in 2006, 2013 and 2014. He led the high school to 12 straight playoff appearances after the program hadn’t won a playoff game prior to his arrival.

Per the report, it’s not immediately clear when McGuire will take over as the head coach due to Baylor’s ongoing season. Baylor and Texas Tech play in the regular season finale on November 27.
