Texas Tech’s head coaching search officially kicked off Monday with the announcement that Matt Wells had been fired.

Wells had coached just 2-plus seasons in Lubbock, and now, the Red Raiders are on the search looking for a new head coach. Sonny Dykes, SMU’s head coach, and Jeff Traylor, UTSA head coach, are both being heavily mentioned for the job. However, On3 Sports’ Matt Zenitz dropped another name in the coaching search — Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.

“In addition to Jeff Traylor and Sonny Dykes, one of the others to keep an eye on as a potential candidate for the Texas Tech head coaching job is Ole Miss OC Jeff Lebby,” Zenitz wrote.

“Led by Lebby and Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss — which is 6-1 — is ranked No. 1 among Power 5 teams in total offense.”

If he’s not already, Lebby will be one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel. Of course, Lane Kiffin gets all the love for Ole Miss and Matt Corral; however, it’s Lebby who calls the plays.

Prior to Ole Miss, Lebby was UCF’s offensive coordinator when the Knights had the nation’s most explosive offense.

Currently, Ole Miss has the nation’s No. 7 overall scoring offense averaging 41.9 points per game.
