Southern Methodist doesn’t have a single player that should be scary to Texas A&M. Maybe Eric Dickerson was onto something. But there are a few interesting stories behind some of the Mustangs.

1. RB/LB Kevin Pope: Move aside, Myles Jack and Shaq Thompson. Pope is SMU’s leading rusher (14 carries for 42 yards), second-leading receiver (7 catches) and also has made a tackle as a linebacker on defense. A rare sixth-year senior, the 5-foot-11, 222-pound Pope is a curiosity for true football fans.

2. LB Stephon Sanders: Perhaps SMU’s only legitimate all-conference candidate, Sanders is second on the team in tackles and leads the team in tackles for loss. The former three-star recruit led the team in 2013 with 13.5 tackles for loss.

3. WR Darius Joseph: It’s unclear whether Joseph (hamstring) will play. After the dumpster fire of the first two games, there haven’t been many updates on his condition in the media. But Joseph caught 103 passes in 2013 as a redshirt sophomore. If No. 18 plays, he’s automatically SMU’s best offensive player. If he doesn’t, Texas A&M will have dodged two really good receivers from non-power conference teams in consecutive weeks. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

4. QB Neal Burcham/Kolney Cassel/Matt Davis: Jones pulled a Vandy before departing, playing all three quarterbacks in the same game. Davis, a four-start dual-threat recruit, originally attended Texas A&M, redshirting in 2012 behind Johnny Manziel. How will interim coach Tom Mason, a defensive coordinator, handle the quarterbacks Saturday?

5. LB Beau Barnes: The 6-foot-5, 227-pound senior played defensive end in 2013, collecting five sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He’s yet to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage in two games, but he’s a candidate for second- or third-team all-American Athletic Conference.
