Kevin Sumlin says No. 4 Texas A&M 'got whipped' in shocking loss at Mississippi State
So much for Texas A&M’s stay in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings.
The No. 4 Aggies watched their national title hopes come crashing down in a stunning 35-28 loss at Mississippi State, which had won just one SEC game this season entering Saturday. Senior quarterback Trevor Knight left the game with a shoulder injury after a 5-of-14 start passing.
Backup Jake Hubenak (11-of-17 for 222 yards and two touchdowns) performed admirably in his place, but Texas A&M (7-2, 4-2) gave up 574 yards to the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-3).
Here’s what Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said after the upset loss:
Kevin Sumlin: "We got whipped."

Kevin Sumlin: "We couldn't stop the run today and we couldn't run it." #12thMan

Sumlin: I don't think there is a lack of energy. There were some busts. Their QB played extremely well. Ran it and was very accurate.

Sumlin said Connor Lanfear's knee injury is serious. Wore a brace on his right knee and was on crutches after the game.

Sumlin: It was all three phases today…it was uncharacteristic of us. The botched KRs…started at 7 and 10. Puts you in a hole.

“We’ll evaluate him and see where he is. Obviously, it’s a shoulder,” Kevin Sumlin said of Trevor Knight’s injury.

Sumlin: Not panic situation at halftime. Coaches have done great job of halftime adjustments all year. Needed to get back on board. Didn't.
— TexAgs (@TexAgs) November 5, 2016
Sumlin on whether CFP ranking had any bearing on game: I don't know. People are going to say that. I didn't see that. I don't think so.
— TexAgs (@TexAgs) November 5, 2016
“Jake, his demeanor lends it self to these kinds of situations. He’s never too excited…” Sumlin said of Hubenak.

Sumlin said the team missed starting CB Priest Willis, called him the team's best corner. IMO, that was worst for A&M than Garrett hurt.

Kevin Sumlin: We’ve got confidence in Jake moving forward, and let’s see what happens with Trevor. We’ll see where he is injury-wise.
