Herm Edwards believes there is a viable option for Texas A&M’s next head coach in the SEC.

Edwards promoted Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin for the job on Friday on the Dan Patrick Show. Kiffin is in his 4th season with Ole Miss.

Edwards has known Kiffin for many years and has seen him go from a ball boy to a head coach.

“Sure, I’ve known Lane since he was a ball boy when we were in Tampa together, Monte was the coordinator down there with Tony,” Edwards said. “I’ve known Lane for quite a long time.”

He believes that Kiffin possess something that is important in college football today: the ability to put points on the board.

“I think he brings offense and college football now, I mean you’ve watched it, you got to score,” Edwards said. “You can’t even stay in the game if you don’t score 30 points. You got to score the ball in college football the way they plan anymore. They spread you out, they use the whole field, they throw it around the lot, they just do, that’s what it looks like.”

But Edwards also believes Kiffin does a great job off the field to, from recruiting to meeting with alumni and donors.

“And he can recruit. He’ll be good with the alums,” Edwards said. “He’s always going to have an opinion which is kind of good. He can stir it up with the best of them. I just think he would be a guy who’s used to the conference. He can recruit in the conference, he’s good in the living room, and he’s a good football coach.”
