Bold Predictions: Tennessee looks to earn first bowl win since 2008
The Tennessee Volunteers haven’t been to a bowl game since 2010. Even worse, the Vols haven’t won a postseason game since the 2008 Outback Bowl, their lone victory of the past decade.
Tennessee enters Friday’s TaxSlayer Bowl against Iowa as a 3.5-point favorite and has one of its most talented lineups in recent memory. But the Vols face a talented Iowa front seven with an offensive line that’s been nothing short of a liability.
Here are three bold predictions for the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl.
1. DEREK BARNETT WILL RECORD A SACK AGAINST BRANDON SCHERFF
Derek Barnett will matchup against Outland Trophy winner Brandon Scherff. Scherff, a senior, has the obvious edge in experience, as well as size. But Barnett has made an immediate impact at Tennessee, finishing in the top-5 among SEC players in both tackles for loss and sacks, while setting the school freshman record in both categories. The freshman needs to make an impact for the Vols to be victorious on Friday. Barnett can validate his hype with a strong performance against one of the nation’s best offensive linemen.
2. JALEN HURD WILL RUSH FOR MORE THAN 100 YARDS
It’s been a long few weeks for Jalen Hurd. The freshman exited his final regular season game in the first quarter with what Butch Jones called an “upper body extremity” and was arrested by citation for underage consumption earlier this month. But Hurd will play in Friday’s game after being disciplined by the team prior to news of his altercation being released. The freshman has rushed for more than 100 yards three times and surpassed his previous season-best total on four occasions.
3. TENNESSEE WILL EARN FIRST BOWL WIN IN SEVEN YEARS
Tennessee needs to provide protection, which can’t be stressed enough. But the Vols should have enough talent at their skill positions to win Friday’s game. Joshua Dobbs is 3-1 as a starter in 2014 and should bounce back from a subpar passing performance against Vanderbilt. The dual-threat quarterback should see a breakout performance on the national stage leading into what is expected to be a standout junior season.
Final: Tennessee 31, Iowa 14
