Boo Corrigan, the committee chair of this year’s College Football Playoff, gave his initial explanation on ESPN about why Tennessee is ranked No. 1, and Ohio State and Georgia are No. 2 and No. 3 in the first official rankings released on ESPN.

Corrigan, the athletics director at NC State, shared the committee’s perspective with Rece Davis, who asked him what “won the day.”

“When you look at the teams, all 3 very, very good teams, the committee really liked,” Corrigan said. “When you look at the 2 wins, that you’re looking at with Alabama and at LSU really sealed the day for Tennessee.”

Corrigan then explained Ohio State over Georgia and said the explosive offense at Ohio State won the committee over.

“CJ Stroud, Marvin Harrison Jr., the win over Penn State, they came back to win that game, again very close, both well-balanced teams, at the end of the day, the committee decided we would go with Ohio State No. 2 and Georgia No. 3.”

Corrigan said the 3 teams each had voices in the room making the case from 13 committee members, but the committee wants to make sure it makes the right decision with the information at hand.
