After two quarterback recruits said goodbye to Tennessee last week, will the Vols manage to pull off a recruiting coup and still manage to lure a QB to Rocky Top?

One reporter even sees a battle between California and Tennessee as one of the most intriguing stories to watch when the early signing period opens Wednesday.

According to Pete Thamel with Yahoo! Sports, the decision of QB JT Shrout will be one of the most interesting decisions of the week:

What’s the most intriguing decision to come over the next few days? With all the tumult at Tennessee, including losing two quarterbacks for this signing class, the stakes are high surrounding the recruitment of sleeper quarterback JT Shrout. His father, Jim Shrout, told Yahoo Sports on Monday that his son will be choosing between Tennessee and California this week. (Shrout visited Tennessee this weekend after being a Cal commit since June.)

Shrout is definitely an interesting case. He is ranked as a 3-star pro-style QB at 247 Sports, but his ranking may not paint the entire picture.

As Thamel points out, Shrout originally committed to California without having played a full high school game. He started just one game as a sophomore and was injured during that game before bursting onto the scene as a starter during his senior season with 3,000 yards passing and 27 TDs.

Thamel indicated that Shrout’s visit to Knoxville was “outstanding,” but Shrout and his father wanted to take time to sort things out before making a final decision. It will be interesting to watch if Pruitt can get him to Tennessee.

Here is a look at Shrout’s highlights from Hudl:
