If there’s one position group Jeremy Pruitt and his defensive coaching staff have worked the hardest to bring in players to fit their system, it’s hard to argue that any position rates as a higher priority for the Volunteers coaching staff than the defensive backfield.

That trend continues to roll on as the Vols just landed a commitment from Florida defensive back Damarius McGhee of Pensacola Catholic High School.

The 6-foot-1, 162-pound Pensacola, Fla., native is rated as a three-star prospect, the No. 26 cornerback in the nation and a top 400 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Interestingly, McGhee is rated as the No. 8 cornerback in the nation and a top 90 overall prospect by 247Sports but his composite ranking is much lower, suggesting one service has yet to properly evaluate Tennessee’s new commit.

Considering his ranking, McGhee is on the cusp of ranking as a four-star prospect and is currently the highest-rated recruit committed to Tennessee’s recruiting class, which ranks among the top 5 recruiting classes in the nation. Tennessee holds 24 commitments in the 2021 recruiting cycle following McGhee’s pledge to join the program.
