Former Washington assistant William Inge will coach in the SEC next season, but not at the program initially expected.
According to Austin Price of On3, Inge will be the new linebackers coach at Tennessee, replacing Brian Jean-Mary. The news comes two weeks after it was reported Inge was joining former Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama staff. Inge was co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Washington the past two seasons.
Inge, who turned 50 in December, has over two decades of coaching experience. He got his start at Iowa, his alma mater, as a graduate assistant and recruiting coordinator from 1998-to-2000. Inge has coached college defenders at Northern Iowa, Colorado, San Diego State, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Indiana, Fresno State and Washington.
Inge also spent a season with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as an assistant defensive line coach in 2012. In addition to coaching defensive line and linebackers, Inge also has experience coaching special teams at Northern Iowa (2004) and Indiana (2018-19).
Inge’s decision leaves Alabama with an on-field opening. Though Alabama had not officially announced Inge’s hiring, he was expected to be the team’s outside linebackers coach. New defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is set to coach inside linebackers.
