JaVonta Payton, a versatile and big-play receiving threat for Tennessee, has announced his plans for the 2022 season.

Payton led the SEC with 22.9 yards per catch, as he started 12 of 13 games and ranked third on the team with 413 receiving yards and 6 receiving touchdowns. The graduate transfer from Mississippi State, and originally from Nashville made a splash in 2021.

His big-play potential was on display when he took a screen pass 75 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown against Kentucky. Then against Alabama, he caught the ball in the middle of the field and ran past the secondary for a 57-yard TD.

“My time at Tennessee, although it was short, was nothing short of amazing,” Payton wrote on social media on Monday. “Being able to come home and play in my home state was a dream come true. I am so thankful to the coaching staff that believed and trusted in me. I would also like to thank all the coaches that have invested in me throughout my college career.”

Payton then wrote about his next step.

“As one door closes, another one opens,” Payton said. “It has always been my dream to play at the highest level. I am excited to see what the future holds as I pursue my career in the NFL.”
