When a team does not have a starting quarterback named, the media is going to want an update on the competition after every camp practice.

After Sunday’s ninth practice, Jeremy Pruitt assessed how all four of his signal-callers have looked.

“So, from a quarterback standpoint, both of them (Jarrett Guarantano and Keller Chryst) have done some really good stuff, talking about JG and Keller,” he told reporters. “Will McBride played today with our twos a lot, and Will’s had a solid camp. JT Shrout — he may have the best arm out of all of them. But he’s got to learn what’s going on. He can spin it. He just has to figure it out. So, if you look over all the practices, there’s really nobody that’s kind of separated their self yet.”

The battle for the starting job is between Guarantano and Chryst. In his post-practice media opportunity, Pruitt reminded all his players to have a goal that is bigger than winning the starting job out of camp.

“I think at every position, I hope that our players, whether they play quarterback or d-tackle, punter, long-snapper — I hope their No. 1 goal is not to be the starter for Tennessee. I hope that’s not their goal,” Pruitt said. “That’s not much of a goal in my opinion. I hope their goal is to be the best player at their position out there. If the goal is to be a starter, when you become a starter, so you are the big fish in the pond here, you know? We are a long ways from naming starters at any positions. We are going to try and find as many guys as we have that can play. Hopefully we have a bunch that can play.

“This is a long season and a tough conference. We need bodies to do that. “
