Josh Heupel played quarterback for the late Mike Leach far before he was ever roaming the sidelines as the head coach for the now highly-touted Tennessee Volunteers.

One major change between those two era is the in-helmet communication, something that’s new to college football this season. Heupel, while he remembers Leach just as fondly as the rest of us do, is happy that didn’t exist when he was taking the snaps for Oklahoma.

That’s the team Leach served as the offensive coordinator before he became the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, his first chance at holding that position in his career.

“I say this out of love and respect, but I’m really glad the didn’t exist back then. Who knows what he would say,” Heupel said on the weekly SEC Teleconference.

Known for his antics, interests outside of football and a personality that can only truly be described as “one of one”, a person could only guess what kinds of things could have been coming in from there headset if Leach had ever been able to communicate with one of his players in-helmet.
