Josh Heupel jokes that he expects Oklahoma’s crowd to stay quiet ‘out of respect’
Josh Heupel has his homecoming this weekend as he leads his Tennessee Volunteers to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners.
Heupel starred as the QB of the Sooners from 1999-00, winning the 2000 BCS National Championship and earning AP College Football Player of the Year honors.
On Monday, Heupel joked about returning to Norman, calling Sooner fans “passionate” and saying he expects them to stay quiet “out of respect” for Heupel and the Vols’ offense.
“I’m expecting them to be extremely quiet for us out of respect for me and our program,” the coach joked.

Heupel is being sarcastic and the Sooner faithful will almost definitely reign boos down on Huepel and the Vols. Still, it’s good that the coach is keeping things light and can joke during an undoubtedly stressful week.
The Vols enter Norman undefeated and as the No. 6 team according to the latest AP Top 25 poll. The Sooners are the No. 15 team and are also maintaining a perfect record.
The Vols and Sooners have only met 4 times in history, with the Sooners getting 3 wins to the Vols’ 1. The last time these teams met was in 2015 when the Sooners won 31-24 in Knoxville.
This battle will kick off from Norman on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
