The Army Black Knights will be headed to a bowl after all.
With Tennessee unable to play in the Liberty Bowl against West Virginia due to COVID-19 issues within the program, the Black Knights replacing them as the Mountaineers’ opponent was a possibility.
And that has indeed been finalized. The Black Knights and Mountaineers will meet on Dec. 31 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis. It is the 3rd matchup all-time between the 2 programs and the first since 1961. The Black Knights lead the series 2-1.
Army finished the regular season at 9-2, ending the year on a 3-game winning streak. It had accepted a bid to the Independence Bowl in October, but due to the lack of opponents available for the game, it was canceled and the Black Knights were left without a bowl game.
With the Volunteers forced to withdraw from the Liberty Bowl, though, the game’s organizers were ultimately able to line the Black Knights up for a spot against the Mountaineers, meaning Jeff Monken’s team will be able to play one more time in 2020.
