Willie Martinez is reportedly returning to Rocky Top.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports shared the following report on Twitter, “Source: Tennessee has finalized a deal to make Willie Martinez the defensive backs coach.” FootballScoop elaborates that Martinez will coach cornerbacks with defensive coordinator Tim Banks coaching the safeties.

A veteran assistant with multiple decades of experience, Martinez was UCF’s assistant head coach and secondary coach on Josh Heupel’s staff. Martinez has been in coaching since 1985, getting his start as a graduate assistant at Miami, his alma mater.

Martinez was the secondary coach at Georgia from 2001-09. In 2005, he was promoted to the defensive coordinator on Mark Richt’s staff. After coaching the secondary at Oklahoma for two seasons (2010-11), Martinez returned to the SEC as Auburn’s secondary coach in 2012.

Martinez has prior experience at Tennessee. In December 2012, he joined Butch Jones’ staff as assistant head coach/defensive backs coach.
