Report: Tennessee finds new offensive coordinator after lengthy search
The Tennessee Volunteers have been on the hunt for a new offensive coordinator for a few weeks now, and the search has dragged on much like last year’s search for a head coach.
However, it appears the search is over, and it seems the Vols will be taking a key assistant away from an SEC East rival.
Per 247Sports, Georgia OC Jim Chaney is expected to be named Tennessee’s new offensive coordinator soon:
Sources close to the situation told GoVols247 on Tuesday night that Georgia’s Jim Chaney is expected to be named the new offensive coordinator for the Vols and barring unforeseen circumstances will join Jeremy Pruitt’s staff.
Chaney was Tennessee’s offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012 and even served as the team’s interim head coach in 2012.
Longtime Tennessee insider Chris Low confirmed the report and said the announcement is expected to happen Wednesday.
Jim Chaney is returning to @Vol_Football as offensive coordinator, ESPN confirms. GoVols247 first reported. Chaney is expected to be formally announced Wednesday. Vols ponying up a lot of money to get Chaney, who just finished his third season as @FootballUGA's OC.

In before Dawg fan says they will be better off
He’s terrible. Fits right in at the dying program in Rocky Top…
96-50
4-8
Get destroyed by all of your rivals every year
Pretend to be a basketball fan while never attending a game
LMAO.
Never attended a game yet been to 2 already. You’re projecting again (I’ll give you a few minutes to look that up).
Where you at Neyland stadium where your team won 4 games all season? LMFAO.
He is better than Enos. How did he work out at Arkansas ?
Enos is a great coordinator…Beilema was the problem and he’s gone and no longer coaching.
Not a UGA fan, but they have been lamenting Chaney all season. Seems mutually beneficial to me.
Bye! See ya!
Woooooo!!! Ding dong the Chaney is gone!!!
Enjoy running up the middle when it ain’t working and WRs catching the ball on the sideline five yards behind the line of scrimmage instead of being schemed open in space for long gains.
Enjoy trying to sit on leads in the second half.
Enjoy the most predictable play calling that you’ll be able to call pass or run based on formation alone.
I for one will welcome him with open arms.
What happen to all those Vol fans that laughed when UGA hired Channey 3 years ago?
Vol fans were not happy that Jones didn’t keep Chaney. Nice try
96-50
4-8, dead program, laughing stock..
Dead program which takes your oc you suddenly hate. Somehow you’re salty enough over this to post constantly and go full tilt. 96-50.
Everyone knows Chaney is horrible…Fits right in with the 4-8 has been team in Tennessee…
UTk vs Bama: 58-21
UTk vs Georgia: 38-12
UTk vs Florida: 47-21
LMFAO.
5-7 actually. Not sure why it’s so funny those three losses came against top ten teams when clearly we knew we were not going to compete for a championship this year. If he sucks so bad then why didn’t uga fire him and why are they trying to keep him by offering more money?
He’s trying to troll the pain away, yet keeps commenting. Looks like it’s not working.
UTk football:
-Rebuild for 1000 years
-Get crushed by all of your rivals every year
-Don’t make a bowl game
“I for one welcome out new robot overlords”
You will need very, very, very long open arms.
He will call fake punts too… right leg bumper?
That was in a meaningful game..Tennessee hasn’t played in a meaningful game in over a decade.
– 4-8
– Laughing stock
– Lose by 50 points to your rivals every season
That would be your team losing by 46, second largest UT margin of victory in SEC play. All thanks to that AAU team you call a men’s program.
You know your football team is horrendous when you have to brag about a basketball game no one watched in January..LMFAO.
The one you got so butthurt by you’re cyber stalking my comments?
Enjoy the empty oc field
This ^^^ from Corch, all day long.
Great hire
The rest of the SEC sure is happy and will look forward to see UTk become less and less relevant. LMAO.
a troll would know about being irrelevant so perhaps you’re right. Wait-nah. 96-50
You know your football team is horrendous when you have to brag about a basketball game no one watched in January..LMFAO.
Someone is cranky, lol!
ClemsonTime, it’s a solid bet you never set foot on a real college campus (community college near your trailer park doesn’t count).
Only Fat Fulmer would hire a co-coordinator and give him a 50% raise
For all this years – I never really grasped what a shiitake-show UT is.
Kiffin planted the seeds, Dooley watered them and Davis loaded them up with fertilizer. If Pruitt has success there he should be awarded the Medal Of Honor.
Fulmer should be named NCAA Football GOAT for what he was able to accomplish there (minus all the convicts he put on scholarship.)
So salty hahaha
You should be hating on Bama, yet your pathetic self is still butt hurt about UT.So predictable…so sad.
Butthurt about both UT’s, I’d imagine.
Vols fans don’t know what bowl games are…LMAO.
Get back to me when UT beats Vandy.
You get back to me when Georgia has more championships than UT.
Georgia says out of one side of their collective mouths…Bye, we’re glad to get rid of him. From the other side of their mouth they say “We’ll give you a huge raise to stay here.”
Clemsontime or Clemson beat our a** time… still mad you did not have a D coordinator that new how to come back and shut down Clemson like CJP would have… poor baby
It’s DD2… He was a UGA fan…
Eh, I’m indifferent. I will say he knew how to use the talent he had to work with and spread the wealth but sometimes he became a bit too stubborn when things clearly weren’t working or would build a lead and inevitably run up the middle on first and second then to “adjust” throw a short route on first, run up the middle on second and continuing to result in 3rd and long. Just seemed too comfortable getting to third down sometimes even when momentum was shifting. I can’t say he’ll be missed, but I also can’t say he won’t be. Only time will tell but I think he’ll get the most out of his weapons in Rocky Top
ClemsonTime, it’s a solid bet you never set foot on a real college campus (community college near your trailer park doesn’t count).
Chaney is a serviceable OC. He’ll fit Pruitt really well. Im not excited about him leaving UGA now because it makes me unsettled to have both coordinator spots open at the same time. But, we honestly need an upgrade at OC if we’re going to compete successfully for championships. Also, he may look to bring Pittman with him.
I’m excited that we finally hired someone and I think it is a great hire.
I see the trolls have immediately taken to trolling UT for hiring an offensive coordinator that none of them had any problem with prior to this point.
Cute.
Raise your hand if you think that UGA’s fake against Alabama was Chaney’s call.
I was actually thinking we could hire Mark Richt as OC so that Pruitt and Richt could have a cage match in the Tommy Bowl.
Most UGA fans where ready to can Chaney after 6 or 7 games in 2016. The team has been doing well in spite of him.
Now, that would have been spectacular! I would have dreaded us playing you guys, but the resulting media spaz, combined with a wicked Pruitt/Richt recruiting machine could have been epic. Either way, ya’ll got a good one in Chaney. I hope for many years of you guys getting scarily close to beating us while kicking everyone eles butts.
This could not be any funnier. I remember when Tennessee fans were mocking Georgia for hiring Chaney after he flopped at Tennessee his first go around. Now they have him back! It’s a great day to be a Georgia Bulldog!
this is one of those rare scenarios where it’s a positive for UGA because Chaney wasn’t quite hitting the standard of excellency that UGA wanted, and a positive at UT where he will be a major upgrade over past OCs. It really speaks volumes to the state of both programs.
You guys are so pathetic. Every time you miss a recruit or get a de-commit it’s because you never really wanted him anyway and now you are so glad to be rid of the terrible Jim Chaney. I saw posts from several of you blaming the sec HC loss on Chaney. The last two years he coordinated two pretty darn good offenses. UGA averaged nearly 36 ppg this season and 39 ppg last season. But yeah he is a horrid OC. Chaney didn’t call that stupid fake vs bama. Chaney didn’t roll the ball from the Center to the punter, Chaney didn’t fumble and throw INT’s… yeah he’s a terrible O C.
Not going to mean that much on Oct. 5th, 2019. That’s all we really know at this point.
Chaney gets a bad rap, but he clearly had shortcomings. Even with elite talent, he had difficulties against elite defenses especially after they made adjustments in-game adjustments. And while he certainly put up great numbers his 2nd and 3rd years as UGA’s OC, it has yet to be seen what portion of that was due to the overall talent at hand and the offensive position coaches (with the talent Pittman has recruited along the OL and his level of coaching, even simple running plays are bound to work well). Most likely the overall results of Georgia’s offense the past two seasons are a function of Chaney, elite talent, good player development and other factors. At a base level, though, Chaney is a very solid OC and a good addition for CJP and Tennessee.
Well any OC with any s bar was going to run, run and run sone more with Chubb and Michel back there. Every OC is made better with better talent. Chaney has been a good and very good OC for nearly 30 years. I don’t know and nobody knows how he will do at UT. I doubt we get close to his recent UGA numbers but as our recruiting and coaching improves so will those numbers. Good luck with your search. There are lots of good OC’s out there. Finding one better than Chaney probably won’t be as easy as UGA fans think.
I agree, finding an OC better than Chaney will not be easy, especially with other major programs looking for OCs too. This is a big hire for Smart. I think Chaney is going to do a great job with Pruitt at Tennessee. And a familiarity with other former Georgia staff will only help.
You want to point out where I said he was horrible or can you not comprehend what I wrote? He isn’t up to UGA’s standard. Sure he can put up 35-50 points against the SEC East and 60+ against an FCS school but 16 against LSU (With a garbage time TD) only 7 second-half points against Bama, and 21 points against a Big 12 defense (with another garbage time TD) isn’t going to get UGA over the hump. But he is a good enough Coordinator to help UT on their long and strenuous rebuild. He might get you guys from 120th scoring offense to somewhere in the 60’s. Heck, you might even be able to avoid embarrassing yourselves against Vanderbilt and missing a bowl game…. again.
He’s not a horrible OC, but even if he was, he’d still be an improvement at tu.
Vol fans quit being such easy pray for the trolls. I hate having to laugh at my fellow fans. It’s a good hire for anyone not in the conversation for a NC. Georgia may or may not miss him. UT did have to offer more money because UGA did want to keep him so someone there trusts him. It’s a win and be happy. Don’t have much to be happy about these days. Literally every program goes through a similar rough patch as this at some point so it will get better. Don’t take the bait. If someone wants to try that hard to troll us then there’s probably a reason why. The hate is real and we have no ammo to fire back right now. So just take it in and wait. It’ll get better. Enjoy the little things like UGA still not being able to get quite where they want and then get spanked after all the smack talk. Enjoy Bama getting spanked in “just another game.” because that’s all we got right now folks.
All true. When all you have is hope that someone else loses, well, that’s pretty sad. Here’s hoping for better days. It will benefit everyone.
Hey gotta take what you can get lol.
What is going on at UGA? Lots of players declaring, a couple transfers, now a top coordinator making a lateral (and that’s being kind) move to UT?
Somethings up…
UF had more players declare. Cheney got a $500K raise. Business as usual at this level.
They never wanted those players anyway. They never wanted Chaney anyway…
Where have you seen anyone actually say that? Every UGA fan wants the players to stay like Nick, and Sony, and Lorenzo, and Davin stayed, but the guys leaving this year won’t be missed because UGA has been bringing in top talent for three years now. And there are a lot of players ready to eat. UGA won’t miss a beat and may even improve at some spots.
UGA wanted Chaney when they got him. He helped Get the ball rolling when Kirby started and the fact that Pittman came with him was a huge plus. But he isn’t the guy to get UGA into the playoffs every year, because he is at his worst when the stakes are the highest.
It’s a fact that Dawgs fans did like Chaney ater his 1st two years here.got really bad after the LSU game. There were alot of Tenn fans laughing at UGA for getting him now they happy that they got him back.lol
