Some big basketball news from the state of Tennessee was announced Monday, as Tennessee and Memphis will renew their basketball rivalry next season.

Both Rick Barnes and Penny Hardaway have confirmed the upcoming game for next season. The game will be the first in a three-game series.

During his Monday afternoon press conference, Barnes was asked about Hardaway revealing the news about next season’s game. According to Tennessee’s coach, the series has been in the works for several years.

“Yeah, that’s something we have been working on with (former Memphis coach) Tubby Smith since we’ve gotten here… Don’t hold me to this but I think the way the contract sets up, I think we go (to Memphis) first, they come here, then I think we have a meeting in Nashville.”

The renewal of the series could be unlike any game between the two in-state rivals, as Barnes hopes to the schools create a jamboree-type atmosphere in the state’s capital with teams from all over the state competing in Nashville during the third year of the contract.

“Our thought is, we’d love to see it, even though we like the home-and-home, we’d like to make it a big day of basketball in Nashville,” Barnes said. “Not just us, but bring in other teams within the state. Just make it a day to promote basketball, that’s the reason we are going there that third year. If it goes the way we want it, it won’t just be us playing there in Nashville.”

Here is the tweet that sparked the original question to Barnes.
