Rick Barnes says he hasn't received an explanation from officials about horrible foul call on Lamonte Turner
Tennessee blew a 25-point lead against Iowa on Sunday afternoon, but managed to hold on in overtime to advance to the Sweet 16.
Referees didn’t make things easy for the Vols, calling a phantom foul on Lamonte Turner late in the second half on an Iowa three-point attempt.
On Monday, coach Rick Barnes was still upset about the call, saying he hasn’t gotten an explanation yet (via RockyTopInsider.com):
“The only thing they told me was ‘don’t look at the monitor’ because I was sitting there looking at it,” Barnes said with a chuckle. “But we didn’t get one. I just saw it when I was watching our tape at the end of the game. One official (called a tipped ball on a block) and the other one came in (and called a foul).
“They gave us no explanation. They just said they called a foul.”
Here’s the supposed “foul” on Turner, which sure doesn’t look like a foul, even in real-time footage:
How is this a foul on Lamonte Turner lol these refs love the lower seeds this tourney pic.twitter.com/kCkvVVdRlr

Fortunately for the Vols, Turner came down and hit a clutch three on the next possession to atone for that error, even though it shouldn’t have been called a foul in the first place.
Complete garbage call. Even if i hadn’t been pulling for the Vols, that would have made me. Glad y’all overcame.
yeah it was but honestly you cant let the other team back in the game to where a blown call can lose it for ya. Not with a 25point lead. This has been a problem for UT all season. They have to find a way to hold leads or this dance is ending soon.
True statement…but that was a likely 5 point swing. 64-67 became 67-67. UT likely scores on the fast break there and we are looking at 64-69. 2:30 left and a different game.
100% correct. Bowden recovered the tipped shot, Lamonte was down the floor all by himself. It was an easy pass and solo layup that decides the game if the refs make the correct call.
For the real lowdown, check out Refalytics Judd on the Basilio. This guy has some great points about officiating.
Not as bad as the no-call PI that ended the Saints season … Sad that we still see stuff like this in playoff games with everything on the line.
I can’t stand the Saints and obviously have to agree. However, there was a PI flag to their benefit in a late season game against the Steelers that decided the game and effectively eliminated the Steelers from playoff contention.
There are bad calls/no calls in most games. The PI in the Steelers game was NOT as decisive of a play as the one in the Saints vs ScRams.
Absolutely agreed. It’s hard to think of a worse overall example of poor officiating.
Bringing us back to college sports (also, admittedly not nearly on the same scale) was the PI flag at the end of the MU UK football game this last year.
Back to your point—every game has it’s share of bad/missed calls.
The call was bad. It was made by the wrong official for the situation (he had numerous players between him and play, and was farther away) But the worst part of the bad call–and what I’m noticing more and more–was the fact that Tennessee had gotten the loose ball from the block and started their fast break before the late whistle as blown.
The head referee guy said the standard ‘were watching this in slow motion’ statement after the call, but when it takes someone that long to make a call, the best decision is to swallow the whistle.
What about the earlier call when Fulkerson got shoved like two or three times? Total Bull.
Barnes shoved Fulkerson to show the ref what was happening. A part of me wishes Barnes he’d have chewed those refs a new one, gotten the technical and stood up for his guys. That shoving was pure bush league.
There is no explanation. That call, to me, should be a fireable offense. Especially when it’s not your call to make. I have no clue why we allow referees to have no accountability whatsoever in their job performance. The whole crew should be suspended, at the very least. Those are the types of calls that can, and do, decide games when they’re screwed up that badly. It’s unacceptable in a tournament game.
I’ve been saying it forever, but with more and more fervency lately—-officials need to be held more accountable for their calls!
I understand their job is difficult–so is mine–but for them to have absolute authority to make calls that effect the outcome of a game directly, they need to be held accountable. If that means something as simple as a closed session with coaches and limited media after every game, then so be it. I believe we will see overall call quality increase if clarity is given on a regular basis from the refs themselves. It might even lower my blood pressure too.
Yeah, even in real time you can clearly see that was no foul. Ref’s blew that one. I have noticed SEC teams seem to get a lot of those to go against us in the tourny.
