Apparently Steve Spurrier doesn’t think Tennessee has that much of a shot at landing Jon Gruden.

The Volunteers are still looking for a head coach after the near hiring of Greg Schiano Sunday. Needless to say, that did not end well, and some fans even painted The Rock with a plea for a Lane Kiffin return.

Gruden’s name is one that has been linked to Knoxville and continues to be mentioned in rumors. With that being said, Spurrier’s recent comments seem to imply that he believes the Vols getting Gruden is a long shot.

Dennis Dodd shared Spurrier’s comments where he references former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops:

Stoops is a name that has not really been mentioned in Tennessee’s search for a head coach, and the main emphasis here seems to be on Gruden. Barring something drastic, Stoops is likely not on the radar. In essence, Spurrier seems to be saying it is an extremely long shot for UT to hire Gruden.

Everything remains speculation surrounding the Vols job, but one report that surfaced Tuesday indicated Tennessee is now pursuing Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy for the position.
