Tennessee officially granted a release to WR Preston Williams on Thursday.

It was widely reported Wednesday that Williams, a sophomore, was leaving. Ranked the No. 7 wide receiver and No. 48 overall prospect of the 2015 class by 247Sports Composite, Williams played in eight games as a freshman and all six games of the 2016 season so far.

Williams’ production, however, had seen a significant drop off. After catching nine passes for 80 yards in the first three games, he only caught one pass for 19 yards in the most recent three games.

Tennessee has not yet revealed the details of Williams’ release regarding potential restrictions on where he will be able to transfer.
