Kevin Steele’s brief return to Rocky Top has officially come to a close as Josh Heupel hired his tenth assistant to complete his Tennessee coaching staff. A report now reveals the exact amount UT owes Steele in severance.

Blake Toppmeyer of the Knoxville News Sentinel obtained the separation agreement which shows that Steele is owed $860,870 by UT.

Steele signed a two-year deal worth $450,000 annually on Jan. 12, when Phil Fulmer was still the athletic director, to join then-head coach Jeremy Pruitt’s staff.

The report notes that Steele, 62, “has a duty to mitigate the damages.” If he lands another position, Steele’s new salary will offset the amount owed by UT. Steele’s deal with Tennessee cut $900,000 from the $5 million he is owed by Auburn.

While the hire turned out to be very expensive for Tennessee, at least the program got roughly two months of work out of Steele instead of just two weeks.
