The connections between Tennessee and UCF began this offseason when the Volunteers hired away Danny White to serve as the new leader of the athletics program on Rocky Top and continued to grow following his decision to hire Josh Heupel away from the Orlando-based program.

Now UCF’s new AD, Terry Mohajir, is hoping to add another level of connection between the two schools.

During a recent appearance on Orlando-based 96.9 The Game radio show Open Mike, Mohajir was asked about scheduling a home-and-home with Florida, which he noted there’s no update at this time.

Later in the interview, the new UCF AD was asked about getting Danny White on the phone to schedule a series against Tennessee.

According to Mohajir, that’s something he has been trying to do since his days running the Arkansas State program.

Here’s what the new UCF AD had to say when asked if he plans on contacting Tennessee about scheduling a football series.

“Oh no, but we will,” Mohajir answered. “Before he got to Tennessee, Danny reached out. We knew each other, we’ve talked and we tried – we tried to schedule a game (between Arkansas State and UCF), and I was trying to press a little bit but couldn’t get it done.

“But, yeah, I mean, I tried to schedule Tennessee for – we played them one year (during the 2014 season), long time ago when I first got (to Arkansas State), and I’ve been trying to schedule ever since. They wouldn’t schedule us, I was always frustrated about that. Since they had openings, we had openings, I could never get them. But yeah, I think that’d be a good game for them. They’d love to come to the state of Florida.”

Interestingly, while Mohajir expressed optimism that a deal could be struck with Tennessee regarding a football series, the UCF AD noted that the Vols may not be interesting in playing the Knights right away.

The way Mohajir subtly suggested, Tennessee may not be ready for the challenge UCF presents on the field.

“(Danny White) also knows a lot about the direction of our program,” Mohajir continued. “That’s probably not a game they probably want to play right away – maybe down the road. So he’s not my first phone call to play. And he knows we need games, he knows the (UCF) schedule better than anybody.

“So if he wants to play, we’ll definitely reach out, we’re definitely open to that.”

White talked a big game when he was UCF’s AD and now Mohajir is following the same gameplan.

We’ll see how well that works out for him.
