Syndicated radio host Dan Patrick joined the national reaction to what he called the “number one story on Twitter” Sunday night, which was the Tennessee fan backlash of the Vols nearly hiring Greg Schiano.

Patrick opened his remarks referring to the “hearsay” comment from the Jerry Sandusky sexual assault case and what Schiano knew, or how he was involved from his days as a Penn State assistant coach.

“People lost jobs, people went to prison, nothing ever came up about Greg Schiano,” Patrick said, who added that the coach did an unbelievable job at Rutgers, but not a great job at Tampa Bay in the NFL.

Patrick went on to say that while Schiano was hired for those other jobs, and at ESPN, those employers likely did background checks so something didn’t come up later.

“To me this comes down to Tennessee being delusional,” Patrick said. “You think your program is something more than what it is right now, and it’s not. There are coaches who turn this job down. You’re lucky that Greg Schiano, defensive coordinator at Ohio State, was interested in the job.”

Patrick himself said he wouldn’t hire Schiano, but you could do a lot worse. He said using sexual assault as an excuse made it a scapegoat.

“If this is a coach you really wanted, would you look the other way, you would, right?,” he said. “It wouldn’t be that big a deal, right? It’s a convenient out, and now you’ve stained this coach for the rest of his career. That’s a disservice. It’s embarrassing.”

Patrick then moved to Athletics Director John Currie, and said if Schiano was a strong choice, fight for the hire, but instead, Currie “acquiesced” to the fan base.

A marquee coach now would be less inclined to go to Tennessee, Patrick said.

“Tennessee’s got to understand, it’s not a desirable job, not right now,” he said.
