Texas picked up a big-time win for the 2025 recruiting class on Wednesday, landing a pledge from one of the best in-state players of the cycle.

The player is Kaliq Lockett, a 5-star recruit and one of the top wide receivers in the country. An in-state prospect out of Sachse High School, Lockett had no shortage of interest from major programs before whittling down his list and making a decision.

In the end, Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns beat out Texas A&M, LSU and Alabama from the SEC, along with Florida State out of the ACC. Lockett immediately becomes the highest-ranked commitment for Texas in the class of 2025 as things currently stand.

Lockett is listed at 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds and has also competed in track and field throughout high school. As a junior, Lockett recorded 59 catches for 1,299 yards and 13 touchdowns.

According to the 247 Sports Composite, Lockett is the No. 5 WR for the cycle and the 6th overall player out of Texas. He is also the 20th overall prospect in the country regardless of position.

The commitment of Lockett gives Texas a trio of top-100 recruits for the class of 2025 and a total of 17 hard commitments as we head into the heart of August. Lockett is the only 5-star member of that group to this point.

Texas’ recruiting class is currently ranked 12th overall in the country per the 247 Sports Team Composite. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but that would give the Longhorns just the 8th-highest recruiting class in the SEC.

There is still time to improve that mark, and it will be interesting to monitor how the Longhorns close the gap throughout the fall.
