Kyle Shurmur has been added to the 53-man roster of the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL team announced on Tuesday.

The move was part of a transaction that saw the AFC West team release De’Anthony Thomas and Terrell McClain, making room for the former Vanderbilt quarterback to move up from the practice squad. It is also part of precaution after starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a knee injury that could keep him out this week and in the foreseeable future.

Shurmur signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in April but was cut at the end of training camp. He was signed to the practice squad the next day.

A three-plus year starter with the Commodores, Shurmur holds a number of school records including touchdown passes (64), passing yards (8,865) and pass completions (722). In 2017, he set a season record with both 26 touchdown passes and 29 total touchdowns.

In his senior season in 2018, Shurmur completed 62.6 percent of his pass attempts for a career-high 3,130 yards while throwing 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions.
