Quick thoughts from Vanderbilt’s 51-0 flattening loss at Mississippi State:
What it means: Mississippi State stays in position to reach the College Football Playoff as the nation’s fourth-best team according to the selection committee and the Commodores’ humiliating season under first-year coach Derek Mason continues.
What I liked: Johnny McCrary’s presence in the pocket despite constant pressure from Mississippi State’s front seven. The redshirt freshman was rarely upright during a frustrating night for an offense that never got going, was replaced for a possession with Patton Robinette, then remained in the game until a hit with eight minutes to play sent him to the sideline with a bloodied nose.
What I didn’t like: Vanderbilt’s defense and refusal to block up front. At intermission, the Commodores trailed 37-0 without a legitimate scoring opportunity and had a giveaway returned the other way for a defensive touchdown from the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs out-gained Vanderbilt 151 yards to 26 in that first quarter. Dores defense doing an adequate job but offense has no rhythm

What’s next: The Commodores will try and avoid a winless SEC season against state rival Tennessee.
