Vanderbilt fans call for Derek Mason to be fired after first-half struggles at Kentucky
The Vanderbilt Commodores haven’t been very good this season. They sport an 0-5 overall record and don’t appear to be on their way to a 1-5 record on Saturday at Kentucky.
After trailing 24-14 at halftime against the Wildcats, things only got worse in the third quarter. Eventually, Kentucky picked up a 38-35 home win over the Commodores after Vanderbilt scored a late touchdown.
Freshman QB Ken Seals showed flashes of promise, but the Commodores committed too many penalties and made too many silly mistakes to compete against the Wildcats.
Because of that, many fans voiced their frustrations with coach Derek Mason during and after the game:
Against Ole Miss, we had a penalty for fielding two players with the same number on a kickoff. Today, we tried to call a kickoff fair catch after the ball had already bounced and been picked up, on the 1 yard line. There’s a coaching issue here. Fire Derek Mason.

How does Derek Mason still have a head coach job in the SEC?

The worst football team I’ve ever watched. And it’s not even close. Derek Mason has to go.

Fire Derek Mason tonight. Don’t even let him get back on the bus. https://t.co/YgzX5OHqcP

If you had to pick Derek Mason or Adam Gase to be your football coach, who would you choose?

Is their a soul on the planet that thinks Derek Mason deserves to continue coaching at the D1 level? @VandyAD @tmcclelland

Ken Seals gets Vandy all the way to 1st and Goal at the 5 and Derek Mason takes him out… just incredibly dumb coaching. https://t.co/lkAMPPkysa

Things don’t seem to be working out at Vanderbilt. If the axe falls on Derek Mason, you have to wonder if the Commodores will consider Penn St’s James Franklin. He used to coach there.

The Freshman Vandy QB is just talented enough that he’ll probably get Derek Mason another season at Vandy.

Mason is now 27-53 overall at Vanderbilt as he makes his way through his seventh season at the helm of the program.
It’s unlikely that Vandy would make a change before the end of the season, but we’ll see what happens in Nashville moving forward.
