Here are a couple thoughts about Florida’s big upset win over the Georgia Bulldogs.

What it means: Florida’s still alive in the SEC East. The chances of the Gators actually winning the division remain a long shot, but the Gators and Muschamp live to fight another day. It was easily Florida’s best game of the season and Muschamp’s embattled players suddenly were playing with a ton of confidence. Today’s team looked more like 2012 Florida rather than the squad we’ve seen for nearly two seasons. We could be seeing a different Gators team during this season’s final stretch.

What I liked: The power run game. Offensively, it wasn’t flashy, but it was incredibly effective. The Gators committed to the run game with Treon Harris making his first collegiate start and Florida dominated the line of scrimmage. Matt Jones and Kelvin Taylor combined for 389 yards as the ‘Dawgs allowed a season-high 418 rushing yards. Coming into the game, Georgia was expected to dominate the rushing game with Nick Chubb in the backfield, but UGA couldn’t match the effectiveness of the Gators’ ground game.

What I didn’t like: The ultra-conservative playcalling. While the running game did very well, the conservative playcalling was almost too conservative near the end of the game. The Gators passed the ball once during the entire second half and desperately tried to run the clock out and they didn’t do much in the fourth quarter. Florida’s lack of balance on offense opened up the door for UGA’s offense to cut the lead down and make it close, but the ‘Dawgs couldn’t capitalize and Florida’s defense stepped up when they needed to hold off any chance of a comeback.

Who’s the man: This week’s distinction is shared by both Taylor and Jones. The two running backs led Florida’s offense all day as the Gators’ offense was one-dimensional game. Despite the lack of balance for Florida, Taylor and Jones dominated and were a big reason for the Gators’ success today.

Key play: Florida’s fake FG. Down 7-0, it appeared the Gators were setting up to hit a short FG to cut Georgia’s lead, but Muschamp had a little something up his sleeve. Walk-on wide receiver Michael McNeely takes the snap and runs 39 yards for a stunning touchdown to tie the game up early in the first half. The fake gave UF some much needed confidence and momentum.

What’s next: Florida travels to Vanderbilt next week to take on the Commodores. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. ET.
