The annual exodus from Alabama’s running back depth chart continued Tuesday, this time not due to a transfer.

The Crimson Tide suspended Tyren Jones indefinitely due to “conduct not to the standard of the Alabama football program,” the team announced in a media release.

Jones, at 5-foot-9 and 212 pounds, was a four-star member of the 2013 class. Before the suspension, he appeared in line to compete for significant carries in spring practice. He carried 36 times for 224 yards (6.2 yards per carry) as a redshirt freshman, finishing as the team’s fourth-leading rusher.

If Jones doesn’t return by the start of spring practice next month, that leaves Derrick Henry, Kenyan Drake (off a broken leg), newcomer Bo Scarbrough (part of the ’14 class, he joined practice in December) and early enrollee Desherrius Flowers. Damien Harris will join the team this summer.

In recent seasons, Alvin Kamara, Dee Hart and Altee Tenpenny have transferred away from the log-jammed Tide backfield (Kamara after multiple suspensions).

Between T.J. Yeldon, QB Blake Sims and Tenpenny, the Tide already are losing 1,465 rushing yards. Fullback Jalston Fowler also finished his eligibility.

The Tide backfield isn’t close to barren, but it’s getting a little thinner than usual. That could actually be good news in Tuscaloosa for players like Scarborough and Harris, both sought-after members of the last two recruiting classes. Perhaps Jones can work his way out of the doghouse — there’s no mention yet of what caused the suspension — but if not, one of Alabama’s young players will get more early playing time than anticipated.

Jones got pulled from practice for a week in the fall due to disciplinary reasons, so this isn’t his first time in trouble with coach Nick Saban.
