Redshirt freshman Blake Barnett, Alabama’s opening day starter for the USC game, only made it four games into his playing career before deciding to transfer. Barnett has already left the program.

The new was initially reported by Matt Zenitz of AL.com. Barnett came to Alabama rated as a five-star recruit and an Under Armour All-American in the 2015 recruiting class after choosing the Crimson Tide over dozens of offers.

After starting against the Trojans, Barnett lost his grip on the starting job to true freshman Jalen Hurts. After the freshman came in and provided a spark to the offense in the opener, Barnett was never again able to mount much of a challenge to Hurts. Since his insertion into the lineup, Hurts has thrived in his short career, likely leading to Barnett’s decision to leave the program.

In limited action, Barnett completed 11 of 19 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns this season for Alabama.

Ranked as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback and the No. 21 overall prospect in the nation for 2015, according to 247Sports, Barnett is likely to have a number of potential suitors to choose from in his next destination.

With Barnett leaving the program, Alabama is now down to three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Hurts, redshirt sophomore David Cornwell and redshirt junior Cooper Bateman. The Tide currently have two quarterbacks committed to the 2017 recruiting class in five-star Tua Tagovailoa and four-star Mac Jones.
