The Mississippi Highway Patrol has ruled Altee Tenpenny’s fatal car crash was an accident.

An MHP spokesperson also indicated that neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the crash that killed the 20-year-old Tenpenny.

Tenpenny died on Oct. 20 when his Dodge Charger ran off the road and crashed in Washington County, Miss., near the town of Glen Allan. According to al.com,Tenpenny’s vehicle went airborne, overturned several times and collided with a utility pole. He was ejected him from his car. He was rushed to Delta Regional Medical Center, where he died of injuries sustained in the crash.

Family and friends of Tenpenny have said they believe he fell asleep at the wheel, and Mississippi Highway Patrol corporal Tony Dunn said that assessment is “very much possible.”

The former Alabama running back was driving home to North Little Rock, Ark. after leaving the football team at Nicholls State.

Tenpenny played for Alabama in 2013 and 2014, rushing for 218 yards and one touchdown as a reserve. He transferred to UNLV after last season, but was kicked off the team in August.

He then went to Nicholls State, but was suspended from the team indefinitely on Oct. 20 after being arrested on a weapons charge. After he was suspended, he got in his car and headed for home in Arkansas. But he never made it.
