Arkansas has suspended two key defensive backs for the Texas Bowl against Texas, coach Bret Bielema announced Saturday.

Safety Rohan Gaines and cornerback Carroll Washington are off the team for unspecified violation of team rules, multiple outlets reported.

Both played in all 12 regular-season games for the Razorbacks. Gaines is fifth on the team in tackles and returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in a 30-0 win against Ole Miss, while Washington, a backup at corner, also has an interception. The latter is a senior and won’t be back, though Gaines has a chance to return to the team after the bowl game, Bielema told reporters.

Liddell, a freshman, started in place of Gaines against Ole Miss. Gaines incurred a targeting ejection against LSU in the second half and missed the first half against the Rebels before making one of the biggest plays of the season.

It’s not the first time Gaines has gotten on Bielema’s bad side. According to Eric Bolin of the Times-Record, Gaines has given a me-first impression in the past:

“Our guys carried around water jugs to stress hydration; all summer you’d see guys walking around with these milk jugs,” Bielema said. “I grabbed (Gaines) one day because his milk jug said, like, ‘First round, second round, third round, fourth round.’ I said ‘Bro, what are you doing? Why don’t you try being the Arkansas safety here first before you jump into the NFL?’ I think he finally gets that now.”

The Longhorns operate a run-oriented offense under coach Charlie Strong, but Texas WRs John Harris and Jaxon Shipley have combined for 122 receptions. The Razorbacks will miss Washington and especially Gaines in the bowl as the team tries to finish Bielema’s second season with seven wins.

Gaines’ status for the 2015 season is worth following.
