The Razorbacks landed the No. 29 class in the country in ’14, the first full recruiting cycle of the Bret Bielema era.

But how much did that class contribute to Arkansas’ turnaround 7-6 season?

Overall, 15 of the 27 signees played at least one game. Those 15 players participated in a combined 151 games, starting 27. Cornerback Henre’ Toliver was the only true freshman to start multiple games, and he tied for the team lead with two interceptions.

The Razorbacks did get big contributions from a few junior college players. Sebastian Tretola started at left guard on the largest offensive line in all of football, clearing a path for two 1,000-yard rushers and scoring a fat-guy touchdown on one of the most entertaining goal-line plays of the year. Cody Hollister started seven games at receiver, and Josh Williams finished eighth on the team in tackles.

If you played wide receiver or defensive back in this class, you were at a major advantage. Those positions accounted for nine of the 15 signees from last year’s class that played in 2014, including Jared Cornelius, a punt returner who also finished fourth on the team in receiving.

Bijhon Jackson worked his way into the rotation at defensive tackle and is in position to play a major role this fall.

Several big-time pieces of the class never played. Four-star receiver Jojo Robinson fought injuries and redshirted, but could have a big impact in 2015. Endearing stories already are emerging about Robinson from Fayetteville, Ark.

“We have a little tackle circuit, you guys know Robb (Smith) and he’s got certain philosophies. We do this tackle circuit, and so there are five or six elements to that. And one of the things is, you need to tackle a guy on a mat tackle, and Jojo won’t get tackled. He refuses, and I kind of got pissed,” coach Bret Bielema said, according to 247Sports. “So I sent (Martrell) Spaight after him, and he won’t go down.

“He said, ‘Coach, I’m nobody’s tackling dummy.’ And I have to take a step back and control myself but I also appreciate what he’s saying. He just doesn’t want to be tackled.”

Top recruit Brian Wallace, a four-star offensive lineman, redshirted after spending last season as the backup at right tackle. Bielema said he’s added about 30 pounds since he arrived and looks like a different player.

The coach also called 6-foot-2 redshirt freshman safety Santos Ramirez “extremely physical” and said he “looks like an NFL safety.”

Arkansas needs better production at receiver and in the secondary next year, so perhaps this class can continue to mature and shore up those weak points.
