Four-star defensive tackle Daron Payne — a native of Birmingham, Ala. — arrived in Orlando Sunday nearing his decision regarding where to attend school.

Payne is scheduled to commit to either Auburn or Alabama on Friday during the Under Armour All-America Game in Tampa. As of Sunday, the Shades Valley star’s decision remains in flux.

“I have a school that I like. I’m going to talk to my coaches, my mom and dad over the week,” Payne told AuburnUndercover.com. “It’s been real hard. I love both schools, it’s a hard decision. I’ve got a school that I like and I’m going to do a little more research.”

Neither the Tigers or Crimson Tide have been notified of his decision, though Payne has said he will notify both programs of his decision prior to Friday afternoon’s game on ESPN2. Payne said both schools are pitching him the same story, in terms of fit and position.

“Right now, just playing time and defensive scheme. I personally don’t like the ‘zero,’ I like the three-technique. They’re both telling me three,” Payne said.

Auburn and Alabama both visited Payne before the dead period, with Payne adding contact with coaches has been limited in the two weeks since.

“I’ve talked to [Auburn defensive line coach Rodney] Garner a week ago. He said I’ve been his first priority and I still am, and how much he’d love for me to come up there,” Payne said.

“I’ve talked to Coach [Nick] Saban like two weeks ago. [Alabama offensive line coach Mario] Cristobal was texting me Merry Christmas the other day.”

Whatever his decision on Friday, Payne said he will take the remainder of his official visits during the month of January.
