One prominent name in the Auburn offensive coordinator search has been former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich.

With Oregon’s and Auburn’s offenses somewhat similar, it’s easy to see why Helfrich would be mentioned for the vacancy.

However, according to AL.com’s James Crepea, there have been some developments with Helfrich and the Tigers. Citing a source, the report says that Helfrich would be “highly unlikely” to accept Auburn’s offensive coordinator position if it were offered. The main reason is that Helfrich is waiting on a head coaching job.

Obviously, if you look around college football, there aren’t any at this moment, as Western Michigan was filled Friday and Cal is in contract negotiations with Wisconsin DC Justin Wilcox. So, Helfrich could be waiting awhile.

We shouldn’t cross out Helfrich completely yet.

Helfrich was 37-16 as head coach for Oregon, and he’s owed a buyout of $11.6 million over the next three years.

Arizona State offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey could be considered the favorite at this point. Depending on which way Gus Malzahn will go, it wouldn’t surprise me if offensive line coach Herb Hand took over the play-calling duties either.

Former offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee recently left Auburn for UConn in the same position for the half the money.

Be sure and check out Crepea’s complete breakdown of some other candidates who are on the board.
