You can forget about Auburn leaning on a two-quarterback system this fall. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn briefly touched on the subject Tuesday when he shot down the thought, claiming that he wants one starter and that’s that.

“We really want to have a starter,” Malzahn said at the College Football Hall of Fame, according to SEC Country. “We’ll have ways (to figure it out). We’ll to put our guys in situations for them to step up.

“If you remember Nick Marshall a few years ago, it was pretty equal for the first two or three weeks and then we decided to go live one time and then he won the job that day,” he added. “Now, hopefully we won’t have to get to a point where we have our quarterbacks go live in fall camp — that’s not the plan — but we’ll make sure that when we evaluate, the best guy that gives us the best chance to win will be our starter.”

As things currently stand, three different quarterbacks are vying for the starting position: senior Jeremy Johnson, redshirt sophomore Sean White, and JUCO transfer John Franklin III. However, it’s Franklin that seems to have the edge after a breakout spring performance.

“He is a talented young man, he’s very fast and he wants to be good,” Malzahn said of Franklin. “I think that’s important. He’s still learning the offense but the fact that he’s very coachable, wants to be good, he’s right in the middle of the thing right now.”

Johnson and White shared time under center in 2015, but both struggled mightily. The two combined to throw 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, leading the team to an extremely disappointing 7-6 (2-6) record while orchestrating the SEC’s No. 8-ranked scoring offense (27.5 points per game).
