Florida’s 2014 campaign started off promising when the Gators pummeled the Eastern Michigan Eagles at home on Sep. 6, 2014 in one of the highest offensive outputs the Gators have shown in years, but the season quickly unraveled. Ultimately, Will Muschamp would be fired before the season concluded.

We take a look at the five defining moments of the season:

5. Alabama scores on first play of the game. When the 2-0 Gators traveled to Tuscaloosa in September, Florida fans were cautiously optimistic about the season and about the remote chances of an upset against Muschamp’s old mentor. When Kenyon Drake took a Blake Sims pass 87 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the Tide, it was pretty clear that the Gators would be no match for Alabama. Florida would lose the game 42-21.

Memorable Quote: “We didn’t make the plays and they did. We didn’t get it done. It’s a matter of execution.” -Driskel

4. Treon wins at Neyland. Despite the rough season, the moment where the true freshman quarterback Treon Harris entered the game for struggling Jeff Driskel in front of 100,000 hostile Tennessee fans would be one of the high points of the season. Down 9-0, Harris led the Gators on two scoring drives and ultimately to the 10-9 victory at Tennessee. Unfortunately, the nice win would be overshadowed mere hours later back in Gainesville by rape allegations which would eventually be dropped.

Memorable Quote: “It’s great to see all these people out here getting disappointed.” -Muschamp at the Tennessee crowd

3. Heart breaking loss to LSU. The Gators did everything they could to lose to LSU at home in a very winnable game. With Treon Harris suspended due to rape allegations, Driskel led the Gators well, but typical offensive woes plagued the Gators. Tevin Westbrook dropped a third down pass in the end zone, and Muschamp lost his 11th game of the previous 18. It was the beginning of the end for the Will Muschamp era in Gainesville.

2. The Missouri blow out. In one of the most embarrassing home performances in recent memory for Florida football, the Gators simply rolled over against the visiting Missouri Tigers on Oct. 18, 2014, one week after the heart breaking LSU loss. The game was the Will Muschamp era in a nutshell: great defense, awful offense and an embarrassing loss. After Missouri left Gainesville with a 42-13 win, it was likely that Will Muschamp’s future was set, though he wouldn’t be fired for a few more weeks.

Memorable Quote: “I’m really worried about this football team right now.” – Muschamp

1. South Carolina overtime loss leads to Muschamp firing. Just when Florida fans didn’t think the season could get any worse, the loss at home to South Carolina one-upped the previous heart breakers. Two blocked kicks in the closing moments allowed the Gamecocks to get to overtime against the Gators. South Carolina would win the game in overtime, and Will Muschamp would be fired days later.

Memorable Quote: “When you get two kicks blocked with 3:30 to play, that costs you the football game. Just don’t’ know what else to say other than that.” -Muschamp
