Tim Tebow isn’t walking back through that locker room tunnel, Gators fans.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate his seemingly unbreakable Florida football records, along with those set by several other Gators greats.

Here are five Florida records that will be on the books for a long time to come:

5. Emmitt Smith’s rushing yards per game average

Several of Emmitt Smith’s cumulative rushing records were surpassed by Errict Rhett soon after his departure from Gainesville, but that was mostly a product of Rhett having more opportunities to accumulate stats. While Emmitt still holds several Gators records, like the single-game rushing record after a 316-yard outing against New Mexico in 1989, his record most likely to stand the test of time is the rushing yards per game average. In 31 career games, Smith averaged 126.7 yards on the ground. Rhett is the next closest with 90.5 in 46 games.

4. Danny Wuerffel’s career touchdown passes

As a Heisman Trophy winner and national championship quarterback, Danny Wuerffel is as beloved a figure as any in Florida football lore. The fact that he owns several Gators passing records is just icing on the cake of a memorable career. Wuerffel owns the top two spots on Florida’s single-season touchdown pass list, with 39 in 1996 and 35 in 1995. The numbers posted in his final two seasons in Gainesville make it hard to see anyone approaching his career total of 114 touchdown passes, which holds a comfortable lead over the 88 posted by both Tim Tebow and Chris Leak.

3. Rex Grossman’s nine consecutive 300-yard passing games

Say what you will about his NFL career, but there is little doubting the effectiveness of Rex Grossman as a college quarterback. That ability was on full display in the 2001 season, when he was a consensus All-America selection and runner-up to Nebraska QB Eric Crouch in the Heisman Trophy voting. Grossman set a Florida record with nine consecutive 300-yard passing games, easily surpassing the previous high of three, set twice by Shane Matthews (1990 and 1992). If it wasn’t for a 290-yard performance against Florida State, Grossman would’ve thrown for 300 yards in each game his sophomore year.

2. Errict Rhett’s most career catches by a running back

Errict Rhett is Florida’s all-time leading rusher (4,163 yards) and has more rushing attempts than anyone in Gators history (873), both are records that could stand the test of time. But one that is even more likely to stay in his corner is the record he set for passes caught by a running back. His 153 catches from 1990-93 have not been approached in the 20-plus years since. Second place on the list is 96 career catches for Robert Gillespie (1998-2001).

1. Tim Tebow’s career rushing yards by a quarterback

Barring a switch to the single-wing offense for future Gators quarterbacks, the numbers Tim Tebow put up as a rushing quarterback in his four years at Florida are going to be tough to match. In particular, Tebow’s 2,967 rushing yards seem like a record that is very unlikely to be approached. The next closest Gators quarterback was 786 yards from Larry Libertore from 1960-62. To break this record, a quarterback would need to be a three-year starter averaging nearly 1,000 rushing yards per season or a four-year starter averaging nearly 750 yards per season. Tebow’s 57 rushing touchdowns are also unlikely to ever be touched by another quarterback.
