Florida’s coaching staff has added a name that’s very familiar to those in Gainesville.

In a story by SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi, the Gators have added former Gainesville High School head coach Ryan Smith as an offensive quality control coach. Smith was in that same role with Alabama last season as it claimed the national championship.

The hiring of Smith means Florida coach Jim McElwain now has all three of his quality control vacancies filled. Offensive quality control assistant Bret Ingalls (from the New Orleans Saints) and special teams quality control coach Keith Murphy (from Southern Illinois) are the others.

Smith coached GHS from 2008-10. After taking over a team that went 1-8 the year prior to his arrival, the Hurricanes went 5-5, 10-2 and 11-3 in his the three seasons under his watch.

His final season there saw GHS reach the region final, its deepest playoff run since 1980, before losing to eventual Class 4A state champ Tallahassee Lincoln.
