Florida coach Jim McElwain said that quarterback Luke Del Rio has the early edge to be the team’s starting quarterback on Tuesday. Del Rio got even more good news on Wednesday.

According to 247Sports’ Thomas Goldkamp, Del Rio was granted a waiver for an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. That means Del Rio, who will be a redshirt sophomore, has three years of eligibility.

Del Rio, who transferred from Oregon State in 2015, sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder still has work to do to secure the starting job as he’ll be battling with another transfer in former Purdue signal-caller Austin Appleby, Kyle Trask and four-star QB Feleipe Franks.
