The Florida Gators currently sit at 6-5 prior to their bowl game. Despite a two-win improvement from last year’s 4-8 debacle, the departure of key players like Dante Fowler, Matt Jones and others will leave some weaknesses at certain positions for next year’s team.

With several positional needs next season, the 2015 recruiting class will be very important for the new head coach and the Gators coaching staff moving forward.

Here are the Gators’ biggest recruiting needs for next season.

Offensive Line

Who’s leaving: Trenton Brown, Max Garcia, Chaz Green, Tyler Moore, Drew Sarvary and Nolan Kelleher

The Gators knew they would have some losses at offensive line, but in the past few weeks, several additions have been made to the list. Besides losing three starters, the depth behind those starters will be an issue. Starting left tackle DJ Humphries will be the anchor of the offensive line next season, but there’s some chance he may declare early for the NFL and if he doesn’t return only eight scholarship lineman will be back for next season.

Currently, they have four commitments in the 2015 recruiting class but they’ll need some more offensive line commits if the Gators want to feel comfortable with their offensive line depth heading into next season, especially at the tackle position.

Five-star Martez Ivey is priority No. 1 at this position. The offensive tackle is considered the top high school prospect according to 247sports and he’s got the Gators as one of his top schools. Ivey not only would bolster Florida’s depth, but could be an immediate impact recruit at one of the most important positions in the SEC.

Wide Receiver

Who’s leaving: Quinton Dunbar

Wide receiver doesn’t provide as many depth issues as other positions on Florida’s roster, but it’s rather a need of talent for the Gators. Florida loses Quinton Dunbar, but all other primary receiving options return.

Sophomore Demarcus Robinson was the only real playmaker in the receiving corps and he’ll need another impact player on the other side of the field to help open things up for him next season. They are a number of current options on the roster, but no one has stepped up so far in 2014.

After Robinson and Dunbar, no returning Gators receiver had more than 15 receptions and 164 receiving yards.

In the 2015 recruiting class, athlete Derrick Dillon could have an impact next season and the Gators are also bringing in 6-foot-5 Kalif Jackson. Florida’s biggest offensive problem was the lack of playmakers, especially at receiver. That’s an issue that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later.

Linebacker

Who’s leaving: Neiron Ball and Michael Taylor

Florida will be forced to replace some of the defense’s biggest producers from 2014 in Neiron Ball and Michael Taylor. The two combined for 107 total tackles and were especially disruptive in opposing backfields. Ball also provided a spark in several key moments for the Gators, specifically against Alabama when he forced a fumble and had a pass deflection that led to an interception.

In addition to Ball and Taylor, Florida also is in danger of losing its leading tackler Antonio Morrison to the NFL Draft. If the Gators lose Morrison, it also creates an even greater need at linebacker.

If Morrison leaves, the Gators would have only five linebackers on scholarship. One of those linebackers, Matt Rolin, has yet to play a down in college football due to a torn ACL.

The Gators did have a solid group of linebacker commits — Jeff Holland, Jerome Baker, Tevin Coney and Adonis Thomas — but all of them have decommitted from Florida throughout the tumultuous season. Florida is still in on several of these guys, but right now with no linebacker commitments it’s not looking optimistic for a position that has a great lineage in Gators’ history.
