The Florida Gators lost a member of their football family this weekend with the passing of former UF tailback Chris “Juice” Johnson at the age of 22.

According to the Ocala Star-Banner, Johnson, an Ocala native, was found dead Friday night just outside of Pittsburgh, where he attended Duquesne University.

Johnson’s high school athletic director Tommy Bond and Duquesne associate AD David Saba confirmed the tailback’s death on Saturday night. No cause of death had been confirmed at time of publication Sunday morning.

Johnson played football at Florida for two years from 2011-12 before transferring to Duquesne. He played primarily on special teams, closing the book on his Gators career with 19 tackles, a fumble recovery, five carries for 35 yards and one kickoff return for eight yards. In two seasons at Duquesne he recorded 104 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

The former Gators death sent waves throughout the Florida athletics community, and many current and former UF athletes took to social media to share their sadness and disbelief over Johnson’s death.
