Although Florida’s 2015 season ended with a dud, Gators fans have much to look ahead to in 2016.

For one, there will be a new starting quarterback, thanks to actual competition going on during spring practice.

Jim McElwain is known for having cerebral quarterbacks who can execute his offense. Take Greg McElroy at Alabama, for example. He didn’t have the strongest arm of the bunch, but what he had was the intangibles. He was accurate and on time and could run the offense.

McElwain may have his guy in former Alabama and Oregon State quarterback Luke Del Rio. McElwain confirmed that he’s ahead of the other quarterbacks because he’s had a leg up on the competition after sitting out last season due to transfer.

“He should be,” McElwain said about Del Rio Monday, via SECCountry. “He’s been here a full year. For him, he’s got a little bit of a leg up from a knowledge standpoint with what those other guys have really done. I’ve been impressed with Luke and how he’s helping those other guys.”

Del Rio, of course, is battling with graduate transfer Austin Appleby and true freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask. Of the four, one will step up and take the starting job this season, and right now, that looks like Del Rio.

“It’s fun to see those guys working together,” McElwain said. “What’s really cool to see is those older guys taking those younger guys and teaching them how to go about being a quarterback. That’s something that I think is really good.”

The good thing for McElwain is that he has options, especially with Treon Harris currently out for spring practice.
