When news broke of Georgia DL Trenton Thompson’s emergency hospitalization on Thursday afternoon, many fans were left wondering what happened to the talented defender.

Now, the school has released more information on Thompson’s condition and what caused the hospital visit.

According to a University of Georgia Athletics Association release, Thompson had an adverse reaction to a medicine he has been prescribed for a medical condition:

“Based upon recent events, Trenton Thompson’s family has authorized UGAAA to release the following information. Trenton has been dealing with a significant medical issue which required emergency hospitalization and extended hospital stay. Trenton was recently discharged from the hospital and remains under close medical care. With respect to last night’s incident, the physical appearance and behavior described in the UGA PD report is solely related to an adverse reaction to medications prescribed specifically for his medical condition. The adverse reaction required emergency transport to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Toxicology tests performed at the hospital were negative for OxyContin. We cannot release any further information at this time due to federal privacy laws.  Due to the medical issues, Trenton is withdrawing from classes this semester, and his family requests privacy during this time.”

The statement says Thompson has withdrawn from classes for the remainder of the semester. Obviously, Thompson’s personal health and well-being is most important in a time like this. His status with the football team has yet to be officially determined, but barring a change of academic status, he appears to be out for the spring.

Thompson, a rising junior, was the MVP of Georgia’s 31-23 Liberty Bowl victory over TCU last season, recording three sacks and eight tackles for the Bulldogs.

Thompson, a former 5-star prospect, was the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2015. He’s recorded 5.5 sacks in his Georgia career thus far.
